Anti-apartheid protest, 1970

Image

Scenes like this are strongly associated with the protests surrounding the 1981 Springbok tour. But many people actively opposed earlier sporting contact with South Africa. Here anti-apartheid demonstrators are held back by police in the grounds of Parliament as the 1970 All Black team leaves after a parliamentary farewell. This was the first tour of South Africa for which Māori were selected. The catch was that they were classified as ‘honorary whites’ for the duration.
