Dixon Street flats, Wellington

Image

For a short time, the state experimented with high-rise flats for the single and elderly. The most famous of these is the 10-storey Dixon Street Flats in Wellington. Opened in 1943, the block is one of the finest examples of Modern Movement architecture in New Zealand; its slab-like form and sleek, nautical detailing was inspired by contemporary architectural developments in Europe.
