Drawing of Riwha Titokowaru

Image

Drawings from the trial of Te Whiti in Wellington, Evening Press, 8 October 1886. These show Te Whiti (top right), Riwha Tītokowaru (top left), Inspector W.S. Pardy (middle), some of Te Whiti’s disciples, and the scene outside the court.

Few pictures existed of Tītokowaru, something he was able to exploit during his war. Rumours in 1868 that he walked the streets of Whanganui unrecognised and ready to strike unsuspecting settlers saw him quickly become the stuff of nightmares.
