Gold claim near Waiuta

Image

Harry Gardner named his alluvial gold claim the ‘Sons of Freedom’, but enlisted two of his daughters to help work it. Present this day were (from left): Maud and Nellie Gardner, Eric Bradley, Madge Armstrong, Harry Gardner, Joseph Divis, and Doug and Len Armstrong. Many years later, Nellie recalled that it was hard and often cold work – but at least they kept what gold they won, unlike the miners who toiled in the depths of Waiuta's mine for a British-owned company.
