HMS Achilles in the Battle of the River Plate

Image

Frank Norton, HMS "Achilles" in the Battle of the River Plate, 1940. This artwork is part of the National Collection of War Art held at Archives New Zealand. The artist has taken some liberties with the scene: here the New Zealand flag flies on the foremast (instead of on the mainmast, farther aft, as correctly shown in this painting), and land is visible on the horizon; in fact the battle took place 240 nautical miles (445 km) from Uruguay's eastern coast.
