Rāpata Wahawaha

Portrait of Rāpata Wahawaha, a Ngāti Porou leader. Wahawaha and most of his Te Aowera hapu opposed the Pai Mārire religion and sided with the government against its followers. He was presented with a ceremonial sword (probably not the one pictured) by Queen Victoria for services to the Crown during the New Zealand Wars.
