Ron Jarden

Image

Wellington and All Black winger Ron Jarden runs from inside his own 25 during the Wellington versus British Isles (British Lions) tour game at Athletic Park, 20 June 1950. The Lions won 12-6.

From 1951 to 1956 Jarden was an automatic selection for the All Blacks. In 1956, still aged only 26 and fresh from the series win over the Springboks, he announced his retirement. In these amateur days Jarden wanted to focus on his business career. His statistics stand up in any era. In 134 first-class games, including 63 for Wellington and 37 for the All Blacks, he scored 145 tries. His 30 tries in 1955 is still the record for a New Zealand first-class season.
