Jack Hinton VC

Image

Photograph of Jack Hinton VC, circa 1950. The craggy Southlander earned his Victoria Cross (VC) at Kalamata during the evacuation from Greece in April 1941. When a column of German troops entered the town, Hinton, tired of retreating, organised a counter-attack. Grabbing a few hand grenades he attacked two artillery field guns. After wiping out their crews, Hinton cleared two houses of German soldiers before he was wounded and captured. He spent the rest of the war in a prisoner of war camp.
