Firing a trench mortar

Image

New Zealand gunners load a 6-inch Newton medium trench mortar near Colincamps during the German spring offensive on the Western Front, March–April 1918. The Newton mortar could fire eight 24-kg bombs a minute as far as 1700 m. They were used by the New Zealand Division’s medium trench mortar batteries from December 1917.
