In 1840 more than 500 chiefs signed the Treaty of Waitangi, New Zealand’s founding document. Ngā Tohu, when complete, will contain a biographical sketch of each signatory.

Kōpeka signed Te Tiriti at Port Nicholson on 29 April 1840. Probably born in the 1790s, he was the son of Tuhana and Ngāwai. He took the name Harawira 93(Hadfield), probably after the Anglican bishop Octavius Hadfield.
