Private Hyde was the only man from the Rangitikei to die in the Boer War. There is a memorial for him in Marton Park [sited near the grandstand]. He died at the battle of Reitfontain, Reinoster Kop, Pretoria 29/11/1900. Our great uncle William Aubrey Jennings was the last N.Z.er to fall in that battle and is named on memorials in Auckland museum, Wanganui [Cooks Gardens] and in Nelson Cathedral. Williams family lived in Wanganui and Nelson. 6 kiwis died in that battle.
