Biographical information provided by Stefanie Lash for the He Tohu exhibition:
Possibly because of her unusual married name, Farmery, resulting in mis-transcription in the public record, Mary Ann Farmery is difficult to trace before her marriage to Charles Farmery before 1882. The pair had eight children. Two died as babies.
The family were members of the Wesleyan (Methodist) Church in Napier and Mary Ann often catered for church functions. Charles worked as a roading contractor.
Mary Ann died in 1918, aged 59, not living to see her two sons return from the War. Her family inserted In Memoriam notices in the newspaper in the years after her death 'in loving token of a good Christian wife and mother'.
