Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley

Elizabeth Butler was born about 1853 in Ballycastle, County Antrim, Ireland.

She emigrated to Otago in 1873 on the Allahabad accompanied by two of her cousins.

Elizabeth settled in Queenstown and she married James McNeill, the captain of the Mountaineer in 1877.

They had 10 children and when James died suddenly in 1892, their oldest child was 13 and the youngest 14-days-old.

Elizabeth was stayed in Queenstown where she signed the suffrage petition.

She died at her residence on 5 April 1938 and is buried with James in the Queenstown Cemetery.

Her obituary said she 'was a good wife and mother, and won the respect of a large circle of friends'.

Is it possible one of their daughters Alice Margaret Mc Neill married Alexander Munro. They lived in Queenstown and he worked on and was Captain of the Earnslaw.
