In the 1920s Browns, 8 km east of Winton, had two sawmills, a lime works, brickworks and tile works, all using local deposits. Only the lime works survives, but the township still has the usual rural services.

Meaning of place name
Named after Tom and Mac Brown who owned a smithy there - Tom Brown later became proprietor of local hotel. District earlier called The Gap as it lay in a valley through the Forest Hills.
