Farming township on the fertile alluvial plain to the east of the Waipaoa River, 8km north-west of Gisborne. The locality was settled by several families from Hampshire, south England, assisted by the NZ Government.
Meaning of place name
The name was given by the de Latour family after their family seat in Hampshire.
