makaretu

Community on the eastern foothills of the Ruahine Range, 31km north-west of Waipukurau. The district was settled originally by Scandinavian immigrants in 1872.

Meaning of place name
Ma: stream; karetu: sweet-scented grass. The usual habitat of this native grass is along the damp, shady banks of streams, and so it would be likely to be found here.
