manurewa

25km south of central Auckland. Formerly a semi-rural area that was transformed in the 1960s by new housing. The 143-ha Totara Park and the adjacent Auckland Botanic Gardens, opened in 1982, both lie east of the southern motorway.

Meaning of place name
Manu: kite, or bird; rewa: soaring. The name preserves the memory of an occasion when a kite broke loose from its cord at Onehunga and floated south to the place afterwards known as Manurewa.
