Farming locality on an arm of land between the Hurunui River and one of its tributaries, 28km north-west of Waipara.

Meaning of place name
Named by Robert R. Manning, a pioneer settler, after his birthplace in the parish of Elstow, in Bedforshire, England. Manning came to New Zealand in 1876, and purchased property in this district some years later.
