Township at the eastern foot of the Dunstan Mountains, 27km north-east of Alexandra.

Meaning of place name
Ō: place of; makau: spouse. It is better rendered as Belonging to the husband and wife. There are three rocks in this vicinity: father, mother and the smallest one, the makau (the baby). It is also said to be named after the Ngāti Mamoe chief Makau.
