pukeuri

9 km north of Ōamaru. Its meat-freezing works date from 1914. Latitude 45 degrees south – halfway between the equator and the South Pole – is marked on State Highway 1 just north of Pukeuri.

Meaning of place name
Puke: hill; uri: dark. Named after a woman who was on the Araiteuru canoe. Maori recognised the hill as a boundary mark bewteen the hills of Otago and the plains of Canterbury.
