The completion of the railway from central Auckland to Henderson in 1881 encouraged the growth of settlements beside the line, including New Lynn, 14km south-east of the city centre. In the 1950s and 1960s building companies like Neil Homes providing low-cost houses for new home owners.

Meaning of place name
It owes its name to surveyor Frederick James Utting, who arrived in Auckland in 1860 and sought to call the district King's Lynn after his home town in Norfolk, England.
