tariki

Township 10 km south-east of Inglewood. The area around Tariki was surveyed in the 1880s by Edwin Brookes. He recorded the small Māori kāinga (village) of Tariki – one of the few known kāinga in the forested area east of the mountain.

Lit: to toss about. Either a personal name, or a corruption of tarika, lit: to toss about.
