te teko

Township located 8 km south-west of Edgecumbe. Te Teko’s 19th-century history is linked to the ancestor Te Rangitūkehu Hātua, of the Te Pahipoto section of Ngāti Awa. He provided strong leadership during the wars of the 1860s and their turbulent aftermath.

Meaning of place name
Te: the; teko: rock. Teko may however be a contraction of tekoteko, the carved figure on a gable of a meeting house.
