Meaning of place name
The meaning of this name is a matter of conjecture. The most popular rendering is Meeting of the waters, since this is the junction of the Otepopo and Waianakaru rivers. Breaking the name into syllables yields wai: water; ana: cave; ka (nga): the; rua: pit, or two; i.e. Water from two caves or, perhaps more convincingly, Water from the cave of Nakarua.
