70th Regiment belt buckle

70th Regiment belt buckle

A uniform belt buckle of the 70th (East Surrey) Regiment of Foot, which served in New Zealand 1863-66. The 70th, also known as the 'Glasgow Greys', arrived in New Zealand from India in 1863 and first saw action at Katikara River in Taranaki.

The regiment went to on to serve at Koheroa, Cameron Town and Orakau before returning to Taranaki with General Duncan Cameron in 1865. The 70th returned to England in 1866, after 17 years' service in India and New Zealand.
