Jock Phillips says of this memorial, 'the Latin inscription, "Non Sibi Sed Patriae" ("Not for himself but for his country") [on the front of the memorial], is virtually contradicted by the English phrase, allegedly found in the man's pocket after his death at the battle of Bothasberg, which is inscribed on the other side of the monument: "To Thine Own Self Be True"'.
