Awatere War Memorial Hall, Marangairoa

Roll of Honour

The war memorial hall on Te Whānau a Hinerupe’s Awatere Marae at Marangairoa, about 10 km south of Te Araroa, was built in 1961. The soldiers’ roll of honour that is displayed inside the hall was unveiled on 5 June 2006, the same day the marae’s new wharenui, Te Aotāihi, was opened. The roll lists the names of 11 men from the marae who served in the First World War and 21 who served in the Second World War. These include Herewini Aramakutu, who was killed in action in the First World War, and Frank Brooking and the brothers George and Stan (Stanley Charles) Hooper, who were killed in action in the Second World War.
