East Tāmaki First World War memorial.
On 23 April 1922 Sir Frederick Lang, MP for Manukau and Speaker of the House of Representatives, unveiled the East Tāmaki war memorial at the entrance to the East Tāmaki recreation ground on East Tmaki Road. Lang was the MP for Manukau from 1906 to 1922 and had been knighted in 1916. The mayor of Otahuhu, Robert Todd, councillors, and a crowd of 400 gathered to see the dedication of the memorial. J. White led the ceremony, which included prayers, hymns, and the Last Post.
There were originally 22 names on the memorial: three more names were added later (as they are not in alphabetical order), as well as a separate section which records the names of two men who died later due to injuries sustained in the First World War.
