Harataunga Marae war memorial

On Armistice Day 2014 the Kennedy Bay war memorial was unveiled at Harataunga Marae. Erected at the initiative of the marae trustees, this incorporated two polished granite tablets set into a large standing stone on a stepped concrete base. One tablet listed the names of 13 men from the tiny community who had served in the First World War, including two men killed in action (H.R.R. Anderson and G.W. Hovell). The other listed 27 men who had served in the Second World War, including three men killed in action (J.Bell, R.S. Thwaites and J.R. Thwaites ), three men who had served in J-Force, two in the Korean War and one in the Vietnam War. The dedication ceremony was performed by the Rev. Roy Wihongi and the Rev. Canon Dawn Wihongi.
