Hattaway Memorial Oak

Memorial Plaque

Private Ian Gillard Hattaway, a farm-hand from Whitford, was killed in action at Mersa Matruh, Egypt, on 27 June 1942. He was buried in the El Alamein war cemetery. After the war his family planted an oak tree in his memory outside the Whitford hall. In 2005 Alan La Roche of the Howick & Districts Historical Society, with support from Manukau City Council, placed a memorial plaque beneath the tree.
