Kingston railway staff and their moustaches

These men, photographed at the Kingston railway station for their Christmas card in 1900, make a good gallery of moustache styles, and they show the reasons why some styles earn their names. The styles of facial hair also show the transition from the bearded bushman to the urban moustached sophisticate.

  • Back row: both wear styles of chevron (inverted V)
  • Middle row: horseshoe, two walruses
  • Front row: pencil, two waxed handlebars
