The Matawai War Memorial Hall was opened in 1952, replacing an earlier hall which dated from 1910. The Matawai roll of honour inside the hall lists 29 men who served in the First World War and eight men who served in the Second World War. The Motu First World War roll of honour, listing the names of ten men who were killed in action, was transferred to Matawai when the Motu hall was closed down in 1990.
The hall is currently being refurbished (May 2016). Once this is completed, the Otoko School and Rakauroa First World War rolls of honour will be installed. The Otoko School closed down in 1997, since when the roll of honour has been in private hands. The Rakauroa roll of honour until recently was held by the Rakauroa CWI.
