Ngāpuhi war canoe at Waitangi

The Ngāpuhi waka taua (war canoe) Ngatokimatawhaorua, built for the 1940 centenary of the Treaty signing, was the largest of five waka in the Bay of Islands waters for Waitangi Day 2002.

He was responsible for the smaller of the two waka named Ngaatokimatawhaorua completed for 1940 Waitangi centennial. This waka Ngaatokimatawhaorua nohinohi is unique as it was not constructed under the guidance of Te Puea and some of her carvers as was the larger one shown on this webpage. It was restored again in 2009 under Meister Busby and is housed at Otaua.
