Sir Andrew Russell memorial

On Anzac Day 2015, a bronze statue of First World War military leader Sir Andrew Russell was unveiled in Civic Square, near the Hastings cenotaph.

Andrew Russell left New Zealand in 1914 as commander of the Mounted Rifles Brigade. After being made a Knight Commander of the Most Distinguished Order of St Michael and St George (KCMG.), he was promoted to Major-General and led the New Zealand and Australian Division during its last weeks on the Gallipoli Peninsula. Russell commanded the New Zealand Division in France and Belgium from May 1916 until the end of the war.  The statue depicts him as a general, holding a swagger stick. A small plaque is placed at the base of the statue.

The statue stands near the Hastings cenotaph on Russell Street South, which was named in his honour.
