Te Tokanganui a Noho Meeting House, Te Kūiti, 1917

The meeting house Te Tokanganui a Noho at Te Kūiti, showing the carved panels, rafters and entrance. Photograph taken by Albert Percy Godber in 1917.

The house was completed under the direction of Te Kooti Arikirangi and presented by him to Ngāti Maniapoto as a token of his appreciation for the sanctuary offered to him and his followers following his declaration of peace in 1873. Described by Judith Binney as a ‘statement of reconciliation’, the whare was notable for the ‘novel use of painted images both inside and outside’.
