Unveiling of East Town railway workshops roll of honour

On Anzac Day 1918, staff at Whanganui’s East Town railway workshops unveiled a roll of honour board listing colleagues who had served in the First World War. They decorated the yard with flags, placed the roll of honour board on a dais in a central spot and covered it with the Union Jack. Following the ceremony, which involved prayers, singing and speeches, children laid flowers at the foot of the board. Throughout the war staff at the workshop held ceremonies in their workplace whenever they learned that one of their workmates had died.
