Memorial erected in 2007, on the 40th anniversary of the 1967 Strongman mine disaster.

Nineteen men were killed when an explosion ripped through the Strongman mine at Rūnanga, near Greymouth, just after 10 a.m on 19 January 1967. Before this incident the Strongman mine (New Zealand's largest underground coal mine) had enjoyed an impeccable safety record since its opening in 1939. Read more here
