Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley

Elizabeth Armstrong was born about 1850 in Stirlingshire, Scotland – the daughter of John Armstrong, a carpet weaver, and Isabella Ferguson.

She emigrated to Otago with her brother William about 1860 and she married George Brown on 17 December 1861.

They had 12 children, at least one who died in infancy.

The family lived, at first, at North Branch near Milton before buying a farm in the 1870s at Wairuna near Clinton.

This is where Elizabeth signed the suffrage petition.

She died at her home on 28 February 1912 and George died in 1919, they are buried together in the Clinton Cemetery.
