Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley
Margaret Bruce was born about 1837 in Wick, Caithness, Scotland – the daughter of David Bruce, a fisherman and Margaret Finlayson.
She emigrated to New Zealand in 1863 on the Sir William Eyre and married Alexander Kerr Christie, a storeman, the following year.
They had seven children and when Margaret signed the suffrage petition the family were living in York Place, Dunedin.
Alexander died in 1898 and Margaret died on 23 March 1924. They are buried in the family grave in the Northern Cemetery.
