Biography contributed by Helen Edwards

Margaret Turner was born in Dalkeith, Midlothian on 25 September 1854, the daughter of Free Church parents, Janet Campbell and William Turner. She sailed with her family from Glasgow in 1859 on the Sevilla, bound for Port Chalmers. In 1877, she married William Clyde, a stonemason, born in Largs, Ayrshire, about 1841. His parents were Mary Ann and Joseph Clyde. He sailed on the Daniel Rankin from Greenock, arriving in Port Chalmers in December 1863. Margaret and William were married in Otago and had nine children. William bought land in Forth Street (at an address later known as 28 Walton Street), Roslyn, where the family lived until after 1955. William died in 1917, aged 77. Margaret was 79 when she died, on 6 July 1934, and they are buried together in the Andersons Bay Cemetery, Dunedin, with their daughter Minnie.
