Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley
Mary Ann Tavender/Terrell was born about 1820 in England. She was married to Charles Cooper who, in 1841, was a chandler living in Yeovil, Somersetshire.
They had six children, three dying in infancy, before they emigrated to Brockville in Canada in about 1848 – Charles working as a butcher.
They did not stay long and, in 1852, sailed for Port Philip in Victoria, Australia. Another five children were born in Australia where Charles worked as a butter merchant.
The family moved again to Dunedin, New Zealand, in the early 1860s where their last son was born in 1866.
Charles worked as a private loan and commission agent and the family lived in High St where Charles died in 1894. Mary died on 23 July 1897, and they are buried together in the Southern Cemetery.
