Martha Craig was born on 20 February 1864 in Ayrshire, Scotland – the daughter of Andrew Craig and Jane Annan.
Martha’s father died in 1872 and, in 1874, Martha with her mother and siblings boarded the Mairi Bhan bound for Otago. Her sister Margaret also signed the 1893 suffrage petition.
Martha married Frederick Snowden, a tailor, in 1897, and they had four children. The family lived in Palmerston then shifted to Invercargill where Frederick died in 1903. He is buried in the Invercargill Eastern Cemetery.
Martha shifted back to Palmerston, and she died at the Chalet Hospital, Dunedin, on 23 December 1922. She is buried in the Andersons Bay Cemetery.
