Margaret McMillan was born on 25 May 1838 in Argylshire, Scotland – the daughter of Donald McMillan, a tailor, and Mary McLean.
She emigrated to New Zealand in the 1860s and married William Dickson, a lapidary, on 9 January 1869 in Nelson.
They settled in Dunedin and had seven children.
When Margaret signed the suffrage petition the family were living in Castle St.
Margaret died at her home on 22 December 1900 and William died in 1906 while visiting Queenstown.
They are buried in the family grave in the Northern Cemetery.
