Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley
Sarah Gibson was born about 1845 in either Scotland or Ireland.
She married Andrew Gardner, a smith’s labourer, in Dunbarton, Scotland on 17 July 1863.
They had two children before they emigrated to New Zealand about 1868, it is unclear if these children survived infancy.
After Sarah and Andrew’s arrival they had a further five children, two who died in infancy.
When Sarah signed the suffrage petition the family were living in Grange St, Dunedin.
Later in life they adopted a daughter who was born in the 1900s.
Andrew died in 1914 and Sarah died on 12 April 1920, they are buried in the family grave in the Northern Cemetery.
