Biography contributed by Pam Logan

Harriet's parents were Frederick Beardsall and Ann Throne. Her sister Ellen Aslin, along with several of Ellen's daughters, also signed the suffrage petition. See Ellen's biography for the family story.

Harriet later married John Healy. Her mother Ann died in February 1844 and her father remarried and died in Nottinghamshire in 1887.

Further information contributed by Colyn Storer (nee Morley), Sydney, Australia

Harriet Healy was born Harriet Beardsall at Manvers St Sneinton Nottinghamshire, daughter of Frederick Beardsall, a grocer, and Ann nee Throne, born about January 1838 and baptised on 23 January 1938 at St Stephen’s. She was the only surviving sister of Ellen, later Aslin who also signed the Petition. Her mother died in February 1844 aged 35.

She married John Healy on 29 April 1862 at St Stephens, Sneinton NTT, both signed the register, and her father Frederick was one of the witnesses. John was born in 1838 at Ashwell Rutland, son of Richard Healey and Mary nee Chambers where his father had a large farm. Their surname was recorded as Healey or Healy.

After their marriage John and Harriet moved to another large farm of 334 acres at Osgodby near Grantham. Their children Richard, William, Mary, John, Edward and Sarah and Harriet who died young, were born there.

They arrived in New Zealand later in the 1870s and settled in Christchurch. By the 1890s they were living at 177 East Belt, Ellen’s statement, or Tuam Street where John was a storekeeper and son Richard a coal dealer. Later they moved to 44 Carlton Street, where John’s occupation was a gardener.

They were always deeply involved with the Wesleyan Methodist church both in England and New Zealand and kept close contact with Harriet’ sister, Ellen Aslin and family.

Ellen Aslin and her daughters all signed the Petition. Ruth Cramp and Lizzie Aslin were with her in Christchurch, Sheet 189, and her eldest daughter Annie T (Throne) Duke and Madge (Margaret) were together in Dunedin, Sheet 125. Ellen actually signed the Petition twice, on the same sheet No. 539 as her sister Harriet Healy.

Harriet died on 6 January 1918 and her husband John on 23 September 1920, and were buried at Linwood Cemetery Christchurch.
