Robert Hunter was one of the few men who signed the suffrage petition. He and his wife Elizabeth (See 120 Elizabeth Hunter) ran the Inch Valley and Carriers’ Arms Hotel and Farm Produce Store in Shag Valley, North Otago in the early 1870s.
They later farmed in Shag Valley, moving to Dunedin in the early 1880s.
They do not appear to have had any children and when they signed the suffrage petition were living in Albany St, Dunedin.
Robert died on 3 September 1896, in his 67th year and Elizabeth died on 27 October 1906 at Weston Park, North Otago, aged 81.
They are buried together in the Northern Cemetery, Dunedin.
