Mary Ann Hayward was born in 1844 in Pettaugh, Suffolk, England – the daughter of John Hayward, an agricultural labourer, and Harriet Hines.
Mary married Richard Jarvis, a labourer at an iron works, in 1869 and they had two daughters.
The family emigrated to Otago in 1874 on the Buckinghamshire and they had a further four children.
Richard worked as an expressman and when Mary signed the suffrage petition the family were living in Surrey St, Caversham, Dunedin - their daughter Florence also signed the petition. (See 54 F Jarvis)
Richard died in 1926 and Mary died at her home in Surrey St on 25 August 1935. They are buried together in the Andersons Bay Cemetery.
