Grace Roy was born on 2 June 1844 in Drumblade, Aberdeenshire, Scotland – the daughter of James Roy, a farmer, and Isabel Dufton.
She emigrated to Otago with her family in 1863 on the City of Dunedin and they settled at Wairuna in South Otago.
Grace married William McGregor Murray, a farmer, in on 21 January 1867 in Dunedin and they had eight children, one who died in infancy.
When Grace signed the suffrage petition she was living at their home 'Meadowbank' at Wairuna.
William died at their home in 1892 and Grace stayed at the farm until the 1910s when she moved to nearby Clinton.
She died there on 10 March 1920 and is buried with William in the family grave in the Clinton Cemetery.
