Betsy Jane Phillips is the daughter of Joseph and Esther Phillips. Joseph Phillips was born in 1833 in Theddlethorpe, Lincolnshire, England. He married in 1859 in Great Grimsby, Lincolnshire to Esther COULAM. The couple emigrated to NZ a few months after they married. They farmed in the Dome valley near Warkworth and Joseph’s brothers.

Elizabeth Jane was born in 1872 the fifth child of Joseph and Esther Phillips and known as Betsy Jane.

She died 25 June 1893 aged 25 years. She is buried at the Kourawhero/Old Kaipara Flats Cemetery where she is commemorated on a large marble monument with her parents and other unmarried siblings; Henry James died 27 July 1897 aged 23 years, and Esther died 2 November 1932. ‘Thy way, not mine O Lord’. She left no will and was not remembered in a newspaper death notice.

She died just after she signed the petition.
