Biography contributed by Bernadette Siebert

Margaret Phillips is the wife of Robert Phillips. The ship Whirlwind arrived in Auckland on 16 July 1859 from London. Among its passengers were Joseph and Esther Phillips, Charles and Elizabeth Phillips, and Robert Phillips. The men were brothers and some of the sons of Mark and Elizabeth nee Langton of Theddlethorpe, Lincolnshire, England. They were followed in later years by brothers Isaac and Ann Phillips who arrived in 1861 via Melbourne and finally by Horby and Elizabeth Phillips in 1883. After their arrival the Phillips brothers went to work clearing bush in the Dome Valley, north of Auckland. Soon they were settled on their own land in an area of the Dome Valley called Phillipsville, and later to be known as Streamlands.

Robert Phillips was born in 1845 in Theddlethorpe, Lincolnshire, the ninth child and youngest son. He was single when he arrived in NZ and married Lancashire lass, Margaret TAYLOR in 1866. They had 11 children, registered in Mahurangi, near Warkworth and all lived to adulthood.

Robert appeared on the electoral rolls as a farmer at Korowhero from about 1880 until he died.

Robert died 8 March 1908 aged 62 and is buried at the Kouwhero/Old Kaipara Flats Cemetery. His probate left everything to his dear wife. After his death, Margaret moved to Auckland to live with her married daughter Elizabeth. She died, suddenly on 7 Aug 1920, aged 75 years and is buried in Waikumete Cemetery.
